Hi Pip
I interviewed Jack yesterday in Bendigo. He is a charming gentleman with an excellent war service record. He served in 135 Sqn RAF based in Burma flying Hurricanes.
He shot down a Japanese type 97 fighter (Nate) on his very first operation out of Rangoon. He followed this with a further 7 confirmed and two probables. Three of his victories were on the same day!
Unfortunately I learned a lot of these details after doing the interview and reading his logbook.
Attached is a portrait I made of him at the end of filming, and also one of him around 1944 when he was CO of Central Gunnery School at Cressy.
He insisted on helping me carry my lighting cases out to the car. Did I mention he is 98 years old?
I agree, his type are to be admired and respected.
Feel free to share on your forum. Jack arrived in the UK from training in Canada just after the BoB finished. He was in the top 5 of his course and was allowed to choose what aircraft type he flew.
Three of his victories were on one day!
What a man. I am privileged indeed to meet men like this.
I have a hope to be able to get him back into a Harvard one last time.
K
